about

“Desert Hearts” is the epic new single from Liverpool singer-songwriter John Jenkins

The song, a sweeping saga of ever-changing landscapes takes on contrasting themes of turbulence, reflection and solitude. Vivid and cinematic, the acoustic black and white of the verses expand to a supernova of technicolor in the chorus, accompanied by a palette of instrumentalism.

On breaking conventional song structure, Jenkins states “I’ve been a lover of all kinds of music all my life and occasionally when writing my own songs I’ll veer off in a different direction rather than keep to a standard verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle 8-chorus song that songwriters including myself tend to do.”

Jenkins’ influences include the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney & Wings, artists whose songbooks have continuously broken new ground. “The kind of songs that made me think to try things a little bit more outside the box in terms of a musical narrative. I didn’t want to be so obvious in my references towards people and places in the song but when writing this I did let a few big moments in history come into my creative consciousness, mixing it with a few personal references of my own life.”

What results is thematically the rusty shell of an American dream, burned out beneath the desert dust. ““The Wizard of Oz” sprang to mind several times and I felt the tornado whipped me up and took me on a journey within the song.”

lyrics

DESERT HEARTS
I’m watching the sand storms blow
From my front porch
Where will they be tomorrow?
Does anybody really know?

Desert Hearts in the wilderness
Emotions blowing in the wind
Feel I’ve lived more than one lifetime
Will I ever get to see you?

I’ve been down so many times
You can take all my money but you won’t get my pride
You live on that mansion on the hill
Have you ever heard the story of Jack and Jill?

Well mister I’ve seen your face before
Weren’t you the guy who wanted to build that wall?
Peace love & understanding will always win
They’re gonna get you one day I’m sure they will

And I don’t know where they went wrong
Why these things have to be
I always thought that I was strong
Could never see this misery

I’ve been asking too many questions all of my life
And I still don’t know the answers
What is wrong and what is right
There is a world outside my door
A place that so many people ignore

And I’ve been thinking of an old friend
I wish that she was here
Life is full of memories to me most are clear
There was a girl I use to know
She broke my heart but I never let it show

I’m watching the flowers grow
From my front porch
Where will I be tomorrow?
Does anybody really know?

Desert Hearts in the wilderness
Emotions blowing in the wind
Feel like I’ve lived more than one lifetime
Will I ever get to see you again?
